Irving Penn photographer for Vogue

So I was poking around google looking for some early photography and found these three photographs from Irving Penn. What I love best about these images is the dramatic light and detail.  Each image is so clear and sharp, so obviously the negatives are huge.  In the close up photo, the dramatic light is enhanced but the fact that the subject has extremely warn skin, with wrinkles and such, casting more shadow.  These photos have such a timeless quality, yet at the same time they clearly represent a certain era in America, as well as photography.
